Tonight was the first of a batch of group swim lessons I’m taking with some buddies from my Tri team. Dave’s Airheads rip

only mandatory is that we put in at least two hours of practice between lessons. I guess that means I have to start swimming again. I did actually swim on Tuesday. But, honestly, it was the first time I’d been in the water since Turtleman.

I still can’t say I like swimming. But I want to get better. Coming out of tonight, my goal for the week is to focus on my “ladder”. Apparently, the catch-up drills I’ve done as part of the TrainingPeaks.com workouts were doing me no good. I’m swimming really squirrelly/squiggly. We need to fix that.

Fast 50s?

Before I start my day, I would just like to state for the record, I did 4 sets of 4x50s in the pool — supposedly “fast”. And, this time as opposed to other days when I’ve had to perform this routine, I actually timed each 50 and, you know what? It didn’t matter how hard or not-hard I went, they all were 45 seconds. Sometimes, actually 48 seconds when I thought I was swimming faster.

I do have an easy swim pace and it’s truly slower than my T-swim pace. But fast? No, I can’t differentiate that. I only make things worse by loosing form and becoming inefficient.

More progress

During this morning’s swim, I did 5 x 100s decending from easy to hard w/20 second rests in between. I then followed it with 2 x 100s at the hardest pace — this according to my training schedule. And I am estatic to report that my fastest 100 was 1:43! I think, last year, my fastest was 1:48. Sweet.

I was also a dumbass and read my workout wrong. I was supposed to warm up with a 300 easy swim and 6 x 50 drills of 25 drill / 25 swim. Stupid me read that as just the drill/easy swim  — a 300 yard warm-up instead of a 600 yard warm-up. As I finished my workout, I couldn’t for the life of my figure out why it said a total of 1700 yards – I kept coming out at 1400. Then I read it (for probably the billionth time) and it finally made sense. Woops! After all my talk about all my long swims — today’s 1400 yards was a shortie!

I also followed it with Jan’s yoga class. Awesome, as always. And she had a massage therapist in there so you could get up and get a 5 minute massage during class. Very nice, indeed.

Holy Crap. That sooooo wasn’t the horrible experience I had at the Master’s swim at Lifetime in downtown St. Paul last year. The one where I almost drowned and then got the hard-sell from the trainer. The one that had me freaking out and promising to never-ever-EVER to try masters swim again.

Wow.

Tonight’s workout was fun. It was tough. The long pool was so much harder — my heart rate was soring at times. But I felt good. I got in a zone. I didn’t feel like a dork because I was in the slow lane and didn’t have to worry about any fasties because they were way on the other side of the pool. AND

I’m totally doing this again.

I’m trying to remember what we did and the following is my best guess. We either did 2200 or 2400 yards. Next time I’ll pay more attention.

300 warm-up free
5 x 100 intervals as hard as you can go
2 x 200 on :15 sec
2 x 100 IM on :20 sec
2 x 100 (100 stroke, 100 free) on :20 sec
3 x 100 on previous +:15 sec
2 x 100 hard on :30 sec
300 cool-down free
