Hi there! Remember me?

So, obviously I haven’t been posting. The truth is, I’ve not been as focused this year. I’m having a hard enough time right now just balancing work with my personal life and getting in minimal training. This was not my summer of triathlon. I’m still struggling to get back on the Weight Watcher’s bandwagon. But things aren’t bad either: I do still really like my job. My husband takes good, good care of me when I work too much. And the puppies are great.

More than that, I have actually taken the time to give back and volunteer. After many years of considering but never really doing anything about it, I finally hit the submit button and committed to be a mentor for Bolder Options, a non-profit organization in the Twin Cities that targets at-risk youth with adults with activity as one of the main focuses of the program.

For more info on the program, there is a great video on MSN when the Today show highlighted the great work and donated a ton of great stuff:

So, I was paired with my mentee early July and we’re almost on two months. We’re doing her first ever 5k at the end of this month and then we’re going to start biking together as well. The commitment is 2-4 hours per week for a year and I have to say my experience thus far is great. This has been way better than actually focusing on my own training this year.

In addition to that, I *am* training for Twin Cities Marathon in October. Obviously, I still have to conquer something big for myself. I’m not as small and fast as I’d like to be, but the training is going well so far. I can only hope to PR.

So, that’s where I’ve been.

Nice Little Run

I’ve waived the white flag. Due to an overtraining injury in my left leg, I’m nixing the October marathon. It pains me to do it. I really want to finish a Fall marathon. But I also want to be smart. And although my cardio fitness is there, the rest of my body is not and healing is much more important than crossing some line at a sub-4:48:00 finish.

I am, however, planning on doing the half marathon that very same day. And even that is in the air in my leg doesn’t agree. If I continue to have problems, then a weekend away cheering on my buddies running will suffice.

That said, I’ve had a number of successful runs since I made the decision a week or so ago. I’ve severly cut my mileage and early, last week I even had to walk at the end of a 5-miler. But, for the most part, things have been okay. I’ve been stretching, icing, taking ibuprofen and stopping if I felt pain. Then, this morning, I had my fastest run in months.

It was a spontaneous, unstructured tempo run. I went out on my regular 5.3 mile route. I ran the first mile as a warm up, the second mile upped the pace until I hit the lower 140s. On the third mile, I increased the pace even more to the upper 140s and, for the fourth mile, I maxxed out the pace in the 150s. At mile 4, I even saw 162 before I slowed down for the final recovery mile. When all was said and done, I ran 5. 3 miles in 46:38 — a PR for that training route (avg. 8:47/mile pace).

So even though I may not be completing my intended Fall goal, I still walked into work this morning with a sense of pride. A good run will do that for you.

stupid car

Right now we’re trying to jump my car. I’m hoping it’s just the battery. We had some issues that I’ll elaborate more on later on Friday which made for a sucky last day of work, unexpected car repairs that totaled in $500 and a stressful start to my holiday marathon weekend. We thought everything was fine. My car drove and started okay most of the weekend. We didn’t drive it at all yesterday and now, as we were attempting to leave Wisconsin to return home, the Buick wouldn’t turn over. My husband and stepdad have it on a charger now. Here’s crossed fingers that this will get us home to our mechanic who I trust to fix whatever it is that is wrong.

Sooo… I’m sitting here online while the car charges going over news reports of yesterday’s race. A commenter on the Health blog

gave me the head’s up that not only was the Mad City Marathon course shut down due to the heat, the Med-City Marathon in Rochestor was shut down as well! And that race was called off at 11:30 am which meant that only people running at below a 4:30 finish time were able to finish. How much would that have sucked?! I know it’s for safety reasons, but after all that time in the heat, I would have been so dissapponted to have been pulled off the course. In fact, this blog report Dough Boys psp

kind of broke my heart. I’m thankful that our weather in Madison was slightly less severe and I had the opportunity to finish on Sunday. And my condolences to all those who DNF’s this weekend due to crappy conditions. You are all warriors and it sucks to have have spent all that time training to have it not culminate in a rockstar finish.

Okay. The car is started. We’re going to let it run a bit to charge up. It’s also storming cats and dogs now. Golly gee — who knew getting back to MN would be such a struggle.

Hope to see ya’ll on the flip side when I get back.
