stupid car

Right now we’re trying to jump my car. I’m hoping it’s just the battery. We had some issues that I’ll elaborate more on later on Friday which made for a sucky last day of work, unexpected car repairs that totaled in $500 and a stressful start to my holiday marathon weekend. We thought everything was fine. My car drove and started okay most of the weekend. We didn’t drive it at all yesterday and now, as we were attempting to leave Wisconsin to return home, the Buick wouldn’t turn over. My husband and stepdad have it on a charger now. Here’s crossed fingers that this will get us home to our mechanic who I trust to fix whatever it is that is wrong.

Sooo… I’m sitting here online while the car charges going over news reports of yesterday’s race. A commenter on the Health blog

gave me the head’s up that not only was the Mad City Marathon course shut down due to the heat, the Med-City Marathon in Rochestor was shut down as well! And that race was called off at 11:30 am which meant that only people running at below a 4:30 finish time were able to finish. How much would that have sucked?! I know it’s for safety reasons, but after all that time in the heat, I would have been so dissapponted to have been pulled off the course. In fact, this blog report Dough Boys psp

kind of broke my heart. I’m thankful that our weather in Madison was slightly less severe and I had the opportunity to finish on Sunday. And my condolences to all those who DNF’s this weekend due to crappy conditions. You are all warriors and it sucks to have have spent all that time training to have it not culminate in a rockstar finish.

Okay. The car is started. We’re going to let it run a bit to charge up. It’s also storming cats and dogs now. Golly gee — who knew getting back to MN would be such a struggle.

Hope to see ya’ll on the flip side when I get back.

Life is changing and I don't know if I'm ready

Man, I really don’t recommend switching jobs and running a marathon within the same week… especially if said marathon requires traveling. I’m just a little overwhelmed right now. I want to be as productive as possible on these last days at my current gig. I also want to make sure I’m getting adequate rest for the big day. I also don’t want to totally slack in my training because I know some (even if moderate) exercise is good. And then there is the whole “having to travel” thing. Not only will Friday be my last day at work, then I have to turn around and drive to Wisconsin. And considering that’s also supposed to be the most important night sleepwise and I’m already feeling pressure about it. Ugh.

To add to all that, tonight I have to skip my Tuesday women’s ride. As you may recall, I missed it last week because I couldn’t get there in time. And tonight I really wanted to go because I figured the B ride would be a nice recovery pace. In the past, we’ve averaged 14-15 mph and my heart rate has stayed in the 120s and 130s. But now instead of riding, I need to go to the eye doctor because I have over $300 in flex spending at my current gig that I’ll lose if I don’t incur treatment while employed. I was putting money away in my FSA to cover the cost of a dental crown that I need. And, being the procrastinator that I am, I kept putting off the dental appointment because I figured, “hey, I have a whole year to get to it.” Well, that year has become just a week and I know I /they can’t fit a crown in (like I could have that done the week before a marathon. Hah!) — sooo… I figured I might as well get a new pair of glasses and/or sunglasses. Maybe stock up on contacts, too, depending on the cost. And considering I haven’t had an eye exam in over two years (my bad), I needed to squeeze one in before I could purchase new eye wear. So, all that exposition just to explain that I’ll be having my eyes examined instead of outside riding on this beautiful, let me repeat: BEAUTIFUL spring day.

I sound like a complainer, no?

It’s the stress talking.

The week is going to go by quickly. Soon the marathon will be upon me and my chapter as a Web Designer / Producer for this industrial manufacturer will come to a close. Sad, scary, exciting times lie ahead. I feel like I’m at the top of a roller coaster ride just waiting for that moment of descent when I speed down the hill, losing my stomach and screaming with shear joy.

I bought flowers for myself

On Thursday night, I had to stop at the grocery store for soy milk and yogurt. Life has been so nuts that we were sorely lacking in necessities. Me without soy milk for my cereal is almost like me without shampoo or conditioner. So, I walked through Rainbow foods after work picking up what I needed as well as some splurges like fresh pineapple and a couple WW treats. The Gerber daisies just spoke to me. It didn’t matter that they cost $8. I’m usually pretty cheap when it comes to flowers. But Thursday was different. I deserved a treat.

I have a new job. I annouced the news in the middle of an entry on the Health blog, but I feel like talking about it again, here. The interview process consisted of four meetings and a bit of negotiation. On Tuesday I accepted an offer. On Friday, I will complete my work for my current employer and, on June 5th, I will enter the Agency world as an Interactive Specialist/Planner.

It’s an exciting opportunity. I feel like this is a real move into a real career path. But I’m also nervous and anxious as well. Life is going to change. And while it would be easy to stay in the same role and the pound out the same old work, this new opportunity is something I’ve needed to light a fire and worked on some real professional progress.

So, I bought myself flowers. I have to give myself some time to just bask in the accomplishment of having garnered an offer. The work will be hard. The adjustment will be severe. I know the rewards will be plentiful. But, honestly, all of that is still lays in the future so I’m going to enjoy what I have now. I will close out this chapter in my life and take some time off. Perhaps do some killer training (not to mention run a marathon) and get ready for my leap.

The new dining room set-up

We finally purchased new dining room furniture. And it is from Ikea.

Ikea furniture wasn’t the original plan. I wanted something nicer that would last us, like, forever. But dining room furniture is expensive. And considering how expensive our other hobbies are (um, cycling? triathlons?), we just haven’t been disciplined enough to save up $7k-$10k for a dining room set.

So, I settled on this one

there in December (the matching table has since been discontinued). And we got these chairs to match (I love that my chairs are named Harald).

And as cheap as it all cost, I’m pretty pleased. Everything is solid wood (that was a requirement) and it didn’t appear to be too difficult for James to put together. Of course, we had to do this before the big graduation weekend so it was quite a project merely days before family came to down and life became nuts. He did a good job, though. And I think it looks sweet.
