Tomorrow, it's back to normal

Well, I certainly need to follow-up after the sad, nasty, little post below. I’m better. It’s taken me a number of days to get back up to whole foods. The idea of eggs still eeks me out. But considering I could barely stomach bananas and bread on Wednesday, I’d say this is an improvement.
Of course, my training had to take a back-seat. In fact, I used what little energy I had just to make it through work. I did manage to return to physical activity on Friday with a spin class in the morning. I also spent some time on the elliptical yesterday in addition to some time in the weight room. Today, I only did an hour of yoga. I figure that tomorrow I can back to my regular routine.
I did have a pretty eventful weekend. Friday night, I went out with Eclectchick and Sophzilla In with Thieves divx
Loose Cannons movie
Frame of Mind video
(as well as some other ladies) to view The Queen and partake of Tex-mex goodness at Tejas. I really enjoyed the movie and the company. The movie wasn’t what I expected. I didn’t expect it to span such a short time-frame of the week after Princess Di’s death. And I felt like I learned a little about the characters — especially about Tony Blair. Although, I wonder how much of it is truly accurate. I was never a royal watcher, but I found the content (and the queen) facinating.
Yesterday, I totally cleaned out my closet. It’s a little thing — but it felt super good. It’s amazing how little things like that when, out of order, cause additional stress and chaos. I feel oddly put together starting off this week. I’d like to say it’s a bit because I have clothing in order.
After the closet re-org, I also got to enjoy an evening at a friend’s home. It was a feast of Indian and Spanish small plates and it was absolutely delectable. I’m so lucky my appetite came back because I can’t imagine during down homemade blue cheese and data fritters! And samosas! And spicy eggplant! It was good, good stuff.
Today was a treat as well. After spending sometime with the paper and a hot cinnamon roll, I cleaned the rest of the house and then joined my book club. We had a super-interesting conversation. We read both Orwell’s 1984 and The Giver, the more recent young adult book by Lois Lowry.
1984 has always been one of my favorite books — although, originally read it in high school and haven’t looked at it since then. So, I was happy to re-read this classic. It was even more amazing than I remember. Depressing, but fantastic and so very, very smart.
I found The Giver interesting. I don’t think it is the masterpiece that 1984 is — but the message is compelling and I was certainly a fast and easy read. And if it causes middle schoolers to stop and pause and think about life and memory and freedom and individuality — well, that’s a good thing, right?
So, what am I saying here?
It was a good weekend. And I’m ready to resume training as scheduled.
I never lose my appetite…
Even WHEN I’m sick. Sure, what I crave changes, but I usually indulge in cereal or soup.
Not today. I seemed to have contracted some viral nastiness that started last night after hydrotraining class. I can barely get down orange juice and a banana now, 24 hours later. I was up all night. I stayed home from work and attempted to sleep all day. And the not-being-able to eat thing is really bothering me I know my headache and fatigue are worse considering I haven’t had enough calories all day. So, I’m just lying here, hoping my appetite will return because I must return to work tomorrow.
So much for an 11 hour training week. And to think, last night during hydrotraining class, I was comprising an entry in my head about how much I love that class. Now exercise is the last thing on my mind.

Sometimes, I love to workout. Actually, almost ALL OF THE TIME, I enjoy working out.
But then there are days like today. Snow was falling. My book was more compelling than the gym. A Sunday matinee. Sooo many reasons to skip the training schedule.
And as groggy and tired as I was about the entire thing, I still went. It may have been 4pm, but I got there.
I logged 45 minutes on the Spin bike.
I logged 35+ minutes in the weight room.
I swam 1500 yards.
I enjoyed the hell out of my shower.
And enjoyed pizza for dinner tonight. Guilt free.
It sucked. But now that it’s over, I’m happy I forced myself. Some days, that’s what it takes.

So boring, So lacking in updates

Hi ya’ll.
I come here sort of bashfully. My updating has been absolutely deplorable. But, the thing is, it’s not that I haven’t been active. I just haven’t made the time I should for this ole blog. Sad, sad Funnymoods. I’m really not giving her the attention she deserves.
But I’m here tonight. I vowed I’d get something up even if it is just a tiny bit. Dinner is on its way and I have a long week ahead of me between 9+ hours of training and work life.
That said, a few things have struck me as I’ve gotten back into the swing of triathlon training and life sans holidays:
(1) Swimming is hard. I know I said it a few posts ago, but I should never have stayed out of the water so long. I’m amazed each time I hit the pool how my shoulders feel the burn during the warm-up. Luckily, this burning subsides usually after 200 or 300 yards. But, the truth is, there is some muscle memory that needs relearning.
(2) I’m having to re-teach myself how to run slow again. I did great at this last year during my marathon training. But, somehow, it’s escaped me. Last weekend, I went out for 8 miles and I could barely stay in zone 3, let alone zones 1 & 2, for the duration. The second half of the run was better than the first — but I still averaged a heart rate of 147 for the entire 80 minutes out there. That number should have been more like 135! Yesterday, I did better. But I still gots some more re-learning to do.
(3) I decided to forgo a spring marathon! Man, this was a tough one. I sooooo want to beat that Madison time. But I had a little come-to-Jesus with myself and put it all out there. I want to get faster this year. I want to bike faster. I want to run faster. (I want to place in the top 10 of my age group at least once!!!) And if I want to get faster, spending hours upon hours slow running my way to 26.2 miles just isn’t the way to go. Instead, I’m going to focus on speed for my running and speed & force for my biking and then, maybe in October, I can revisit the marathon goal. It *will* always be there.
(4) I need new running shoes. I just need to go and purchase them. I’m pathetic.
(5) The Racine 1/2 Ironman isn’t my only big goal this year. This may be a surprise to ya’ll, but James and I have been talking about what big vacation we’d take this year — and we’ve settled on the Tour of Colorado 7 day ride in late June. Seven days of mountains and altitude and beautiful scenery. It’ll be exciting and gorgeous and challenging as hell. So, while the half ironman is technically my “A” race, the tour is going to take some training as well.
I think that’s what I’ve got. We’re getting into the swing of things, that’s for sure. I need to renew my USAT license and start registering for races. It’s all going to be here before we know it.
That said, it’s finally

Of course, I’m only a week in and it’s doubtful I’ll hit this week’s output goals (even if I spent two hours at the gym today). That said, I think I was still reeling a bit this week from the holiday break. Hopefully, my schedule will be more flexible now that life is getting back to normal.
Okay. Enough talking about training. I need to go out now and do it.

So, I think I can safely pronounce this week as my official week back to the pool. I went yesterday morning and then today. I was slow. My form was crap. But I’m back. And I vow, from now on, to never ever say out of the water this long again as long as I race. I may not like swimming. But I like it a whole lot better when I don’t completely suck like I did today and yesterday.
Not much else to add other than my training is ramping up and, though the use of TrainingPeaks.com, I have a tailored schedule and I’ve pretty much got my 2007 racing season figured out. I’ll post it soon. There have been farklets and spins and weights and all other kinds of training goodness. This morning, I went out for a longer zone 1 run. The only problem was my body had slightly forgotten how to run slow and I kept having to lower my heart rate. I was aiming for a sub 140s run, but I averaged 147. Ooops. Next time, I’ll be better. I completed 7.5 – 8 miles. Not sure exactly because it was a new route. But I was out for 1:17:34 and it felt really, really good.
Oh, and one final little thing.
The Orbea?
She’s here.

She’s totally not the “pink” I was expecting. In fact, she’s a whole lot more purple-ish if you ask me.
But I like her. She’s cool and flashy. And there are whole lot more photos on my Flickr site
(including the incredible matching carbon water bottle cages
that she had to have). It’s kind of tough getting a bike this nice in January. I don’t want to ride her on the dirty, cold roads. But I’m psyched. I really am.Terry Fator: Live from Las Vegas rip

We FINALLY got some snow. It’s been a crazy, crazy holiday season. More damp and rainy than crisp and white and yesterday’s 1 inch — modest as it was — was a welcome relief.
So, when we awoke to bright sunshine and a white ground-covering, we headed out for a long walk. It was beautiful. We took some photos and tried to remember what it was like to have snow.
